Big Mama in Da House!

Yes, that is Renee, gradually disappearing behind what appears to be a 300 pound child. Has she ever looked more beautiful? At least what we can see of her? Those of you who are lucky enough to see her at Christmas better give her a kiss fast before all that's visible are a few wisps of hair. Awe, my Ree, you're amazing, I LOVE YOU!

Ah, Hong Kong at Christmas time in all of its holiday splendor. Bruce and I spent Sunday at the city square where the festivities included a break dancing contest and dishwashing detergent mascots running amok. That's me with Cif, Your Helpful Household Cleaner Combo At Home.

And here's the break dancing MC yo.

A Falun Gong protestor....He appeared to be levitating.

A view of Hong Kong (and a happy little junk) from the harbor ferry.

No, Hong Kong is not under siege...this is just the worst photo of fireworks going off ever! Haha...

Nothing Comes Between Me and My Giovens

Apparently, Calvin Klein has a bastard (Italian? Austrian?) cousin working out of Asia. Who knew? Those Kelvins/Kleins, underwear must be in the DNA. These skivvies were spotted at the Ladies Market in Kowloon where you can get just about anything that can be faked, short of cars, but those you can get in China. Let me know if you are in the market for a Ferrari. I can get it cheap, but the engine might run on birdseed. Speaking of logos, I can’t overstate their importance in these parts. You do not exist without a logo bag. I feel like a little matchstick girl on the subway surrounded by all the Diors and LVs. Unfortunately, the high end Hermes Birkin fake eludes me. Though I have searched high and low, I’ve come up with only plastic. Here’s a shot of the real thing. I am taking donations.

On second thought, it's kinda ugly, isn't it?

Today's blogging theme: FOOD. What do you get when you combine duckfeet with fishheads? Scroll down to find out. If you are squeamish, best to just skip this post altogether. But let me ask you: Do these creatures look happy? Do they? When you are trolling with your shopping cart through the Wholefoods or the DAG or the Garden of Eden and you glance over at the dead fish stuck in a block of ice with a carrot hanging out of its mouth (as a garnish), do you get that warm, mushy feeling you get when you see a happy fish swimming around in bubbly tank? Do you feel the way you felt when you went to Sea World as a kid and saw Shamoo? I think not. I think it's time we all rethink our eating habits and pledge to eat nothing that has a face (or feet).

On another note...I've started a really fun freelance gig here in Hong Kong and it's keeping me so busy! I'm working on a travel type magazine doing editorial work. My morning subway commute is lightyears away from New York’s. It’s so organized and technologically advanced I can barely process it. They even have mechanized glass barriers on the platforms to prevent people from falling on the tracks—ingenious! And the trains tend to smell more like Windex than...urine. The downside to all this efficiency: no street musicians anywhere.

Duckfeet +

Fishheads =

...equals many hummus sandwiches for me.

Poor doggie! Much to her surprise, Sedra was spayed this weekend. Tragically, this means no Sedra puppies! But it was in her best interest and what would we do with a litter of pups in Hong Kong? She is recovering nicely, but is very unhappy about wearing the cone.

At LONG last and two months to the day!The site is finally up. Let's catch up on lost time. Here are some images of my life in the Far East so far. More daily updates to come, stay tuned and bookmark!

Hong Kong as seen from Victoria Peak on a characteristically smoggy day.

Junks (wooden boats) on the harbor. Taking a junk out to one of the nearby islands is a favorite Hong Kong pastime. Trips usually culminate in food and drinks at a seaside island restaurant--mostly seafood--so I stick to veggies and rice. We've done it a couple of times--FUN when the sea is calm and the sun is shining.

Bruce, in a pensive moment, at the ocean side of Hong Kong island...in December.

Me self-portraiting on the Great Wall of China, an amazing and absurd feat of engineering. So much colder there than tropical Hong Kong--hence the knits.

Chinese New Year is just around the corner (January 22)! These are my mask candidates...let me know which one you like.

Buddhist shrines like this one are found all over Hong Kong. The constantly burning incense makes the the streets so fragrant. I found these two in an alley called Wo On Lane. I am thinking of adopting them as site mascots. Aren't they cute! A large forehead is a sign of wisdom...or something.

Bruce on our old street, we have since moved a couple blocks north...really north.

And finally, the view from our new apartment...come visit!
